Inauguration of the Academic Year 2024-2025 with James Manyika, President Research, Technology, and Society at Google: a dialogue on Artificial Intelligence and the future of Education
The Inauguration Ceremony of Academic Year 2024-2025 took place in the Aula Magna Mario Arcelli on the Viale Pola Campus with the participation of James Manyika, President Research, Technology, and Society at Google. As the guest of honour, James Manyika engaged in a discussion on the opportunities and risks of Artificial Intelligence with Father Paolo Benanti, Chair of the AI Commission for Information at the Prime Minister’s Office. The dialogue was moderated by Professor Irene Finocchi, the Rector’s Advisor for the Digital Transformation of the University.
Artificial Intelligence for the Common Good
During the dialogue, the importance of harmonising technological innovation and social progress with an ethical approach focused on the common good was discussed. “Students will be essential in ensuring that we maximise the benefits of AI for everyone, everywhere, while addressing its complexities and risks”, stated James Manyika.
Rector Paolo Boccardelli highlighted the need to design the University of tomorrow in response to the profound transformations brought by AI. He stated, “To truly manage AI, higher education must take on the responsibility of developing learning models that adapt machines to human capabilities and values. These models should emphasise reflective skills and the cultivation of critical thinking, with a strong focus on core competencies”.
New Projects
During the event the launch of the “AI4Society” Research Centre was announced by by Professor Giuseppe Italiano, Deputy Rector for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Skills. The Centre aims to become an international hub for critical and interdisciplinary reflection on AI. Highlighting Luiss’s commitment, the event also showcased the recent introduction of the “AI Literacy” Certificate—a mandatory credential to assess the digital skills of undergraduate and graduate students. Additionally, the expansion of Luiss’s international educational offerings was emphasised, with 360 partner universities in 73 countries and 69 Triple and Double Degree programmes.
Closing Remarks
“The complexity of a future that is already upon us demands a new generation of global, responsible leaders capable of addressing today’s challenges. This is the mission of our University”, concluded President Luigi Gubitosi.
