Luiss stands out as a top-class hub in international research, thanks to its multidisciplinary and innovation-driven approach. Highlighting the value brought by its researchers and faculty, our University serves as the Host Institution for the ERC Consolidator Grant (a prestigious initiative in international scientific research) ROOTS - Unearthing the roots of global inequality,.

What is the ERC?

The European Research Council (ERC), a body of the European Union, funds top-class researchers across Europe through competitive grants, enabling them to conduct advanced research in EU member states or associated countries. Securing ERC funding is a globally recognized achievement that reflects the high academic standards of our University.

The ROOTS Project

Led by Prof. Luigi Pascali, in collaboration with Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, ROOTS aims to offer a novel perspective on the origins of social inequality.

Using cutting-edge tools from paleoclimatology, archaeogenetics, and archaeology, the project explores the factors that shaped human societies. It provides insights into the origins of social inequality and its global distribution.

Project Objectives

  • Investigate the impact of climate change on the development of ancient communities.
  • Analyze food preservation as a factor in social stability.
  • Examine the role of trade and ancient hierarchies in the emergence of inequalities.

Through this interdisciplinary approach, ROOTS offers fresh perspectives not only on the past but also on the dynamics of inequality in the contemporary world.
