"Knowledge, networking and new connections: without a doubt these are the most valuable results of my experience at Fordham." Giuseppe Scaravilli is a LUISS graduate who earned a Double Degree at the Fordham School of Law in New York, and then decided to move to the United States to work and become a lawyer.
"One day during a conference at LUISS, Professor Del Vecchio told us about the call for applications for the master at Fordham. I immediately jumped at the opportunity: I was born in New York because my parents worked there. We moved to Italy when I was little, and before doing the Double Degree I had already gone back to the United States for a summer internship. I have always sought out experiences abroad: internships in Zurich and Stockholm, and then during my third year at LUISS I did an Erasmus in Finland, in Helsinki, which is an experience that I recommend to everyone."
In New York, Giuseppe found himself immersed in the "myriad opportunities offered by the city and the university: Fordham emphasizes the building of social and professional connections between people. The university itself organizes events and activities to allow students to establish closer relationships with each other, and New York is full of opportunities to socialize. I have gone to various receptions and conferences, as well as the soccer championship between New York universities."
In addition to valuable connections, attending the School of Law at Fordham gave Giuseppe the possibility of taking the Bar Exam to become a lawyer in the state of New York. In April 2013, as soon as he graduated (with a thesis in English in International Environmental Law, supervised by Professor Daniele Gallo), Giuseppe immediately returned to New York with two goals: "To take advantage of the network that I built during my time at Fordham to find a job, and to prepare to take the New York Bar Exam, which I knew would take a number of months, between preparing the necessary material and studying." A few days after he arrived, Giuseppe began a six-month internship in the legal department of a company, and then a job for Google as a quality rater, "which allowed me to support myself while studying: it is not an impossible exam, but there is a lot to study, there are over twenty subjects to prepare, and there are many new terms that you have to learn."
After the exam Giuseppe stayed in New York, "one reason was to learn from all the people I kept in touch with, and above all to prove myself in a labor market where there is a lot of competition, but the opportunities for growth are infinite. Then, knowing I can visit so many new friends in dozens of cities around the world, and to have just as many come see me in my city, is surely one of the most beautiful things that came out of my experience at Fordham."
Today Giuseppe works part-time at Adler Vermillion, a legal firm that handles corporate law and trademarks, "where I am learning a lot, thanks to a senior associate who entrusts me with projects to be carried out independently with clients, but at the same time is always available for explanations and clarifications. The other half of the time I’m busy with a startup, TalksOnLaw, where we produce and sell videos for lawyers. It’s a very ambitious project that I’m really enthusiastic about, and I’m learning a lot from it."
