The History
Luiss Guido Carli has its beginnings in the transformation of a previous Roman institution: the Pro Deo University, which was established in 1966. It was the 1970s, more precisely 1974, a group of entrepreneurs led by Umberto Agnelli decided to invest both human and financial resources in an innovative project aimed at training the future leaders of society. Luiss adopted a novel educational model that followed the direction set by top-tier international universities.
In the following years, other major public and private industrial groups as well as credit companies, joined the founders, contributing to the University’s Board of Directors, enriching it with well-qualified representation of entrepreneurs.
In 1977, the University officially changed its name to Luiss–Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali. A year later, Guido Carli, who was then President of Confindustria also assumed the role of President at the University. During this period, the foundational principles of the Luiss educational project became increasingly evident, including rigorous entrance selection, a predetermined number of students, curricula aligned with market needs and a strong connection with the business world. The curriculum also emphasized foreign language proficiency and computer science. Guido Carli served as the President of Luiss until his passing in 1993.
In 1982, Luiss expanded its academic offerings by introducing the Faculty of Law alongside Economics and Political Science. In 1994, the University’s Board of Directors made the decision to name the University in memory of Guido Carli. In 1997, Luiss Management S.p.A. was established to oversee all educational activities targeting the market.
