The Luiss Executive Board, made up of Luiss President Vincenzo Boccia, Vice President Paola Severino, Rector Andrea Prencipe, General Manager Giovanni Lo Storto and Advisor Giovanni Brugnoli, based on the recommendation of the President of the Luiss Alumni Association, Andrea Battista, has nominated Fabio Panetta, the Member of the Executive Board of the ECB, as Luiss Alumnus 2019. Since 2015, the recognition has gone to a highly distinguished member of the Luiss alumni community, now counting over 40,000 professionals on five continents. In February 2020, ALL President Andrea Battisti will present the award during the annual gala dinner before the University’s leadership, representatives of the business world and of government institutions.
“The Executive Board has decided to give the award to Fabio Panetta, who has reached the highest levels on the national and international levels, making both Luiss and Italy proud. Panetta is exemplary of Italians who exceed in the world through hard work and skills, who accept the responsibility of working for the public good, demonstrating values that make our University proud,” says Luiss President Vincenzo Boccia.
ALL President Andrea Battista, congratulating this year’s winner on behalf of the entire Luiss alumni community, added: “Fabio Panetta is a prime example of how our University contributes, and will continue to contribute, to the education and to the growth of Italian leaders on the national and international levels, in both the public and private sectors.”
Panetta graduated from Luiss in 1982 with a degree in Economics and a thesis on Financial Mathematics. He then completed a Master of Science in Economics at LSE and a Ph.D. in Economics and Finance with the London Business School. From 2003 until 2019, Panetta was a member of the Committee on the Global Financial System, from 2016 until 2018, a member of the Board of Administrators of the Bank for International Settlements, and a member of the Supervisory Board of the Single Supervisory Mechanism of the European Central Bank from 2014 until 2019. He is currently a member of the Board of Administration at the International Center for Monetary and Banking in Geneva, of the Board of the Einaudi Institute for Economics and Finance (EIEF), the Società Italiana degli Economisti, the American Finance Association and the American Economic Association. Since May 2019, Panetta is General Director of the Bank of Italy and President of the Italian Institute for the Supervision of Insurance. In January 2020, Panetta also became a member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank.
